How come if you go in the sun your skin gets darker but your hair gets lighter?

i tan easily and i have very naturaly highlighted hair....

Very simply put, it is because your skin is alive and your hair is dead.

Live skin has melanin in it, which darkens with the burning rays of the sun. your hair has nothing in it that will darken that way, so the suns rays simply bleach the color out.

VERY good question

God likes to keep us guessing!

How come if you go in the sun your skin gets darker but your hair gets lighter?

because the rays in the sun basically bleach your hair especially if you've been in chlorine or even at the beach and the rays change your dermis layer and make it darker i don't know exactly how so i'll leave it at that.

How come if you go in the sun your skin gets darker but your hair gets lighter?

Sun fades your hair (and anything else.. ever noticed your stuffed animal or fading in your car??) And the sun causes your skin to produce more melanin.. but in my opinion i dont really think its melanin production I think its just that you are getting "cooked"... like a toast in an oven.. I can get a certain shade and still be light-brown/red skinned

The reason why skin gets darker is because there is melanin in the skin cells - this produces skin color - the more melanin in one's skin - the darker they are. People who are albino do not have very much melanin therefor they are very light. The sun enhances the production of melanin. As far as for the hair the sun dehydrates the color out of it.
