How Can I Keep Red Hair Dye From Fading?

I'm thinking about dying my hair black and putting a red streak in, but I heard that red hair dye fades really fast. How can I keep it in for a while?

I already know not to wash it too much, to shower with cold/cool water, and not to expose it to sunlight too often.

Is there anything else I should know to keep the color in?

Right now I use Garnier Fructis shampoo with color guard for color treated or highlighted hair.

there are shampoos that you can buy that keep color from fading or running out, but for the first few days after you add color to your hair it will bleed no matter what.

Use a salon shampoo. Garnier and other shampoos like that have wax and other bad chemicals in them. Even if it says it's for color treated hair, their formula isn't very different than their normal shampoo.

Paul Mitchell has a color locking spray, conditioner and shampoo to help keep the color in.

Also, like you said, wash with cold water, not very often, and don't use too much shampoo and conditioner, just a very small amount. I use about the size of a quarter.. maybe smaller.

My hair stylist also mixes my hair dye colors into small bottles of hairspray, that I spray on the color to help give it a boost. I have panels of pink and purple. It helps A LOT!

Or, mix some of the red in a small bottle of conditioner, and use the mix on that part of your hair.

If you dye your hair black and put the red streak in at the same time, the black will fade at the same rate as the red. Just be sure to use shampoo specially for color treated hair. If you are going through the trouble to do what youve mentioned aside from the shampoo, your hair dye will last longer than most peoples do. Also, since you are just doing the streak of red, it would not be hard to redye the streak often enough to keep it bright and vibrant in the case that it does fade sooner than the black. You should look into dyes that can be used in small portions and save the rest, rather than having to buy a new pack of hair dye each time you want to do the red streak.

Matrix shade memory. its a line thats color specific, so if your going for a bright punk red, get cool red, if a natural auburn, warm red... its a shmpoo, conditioner, and mousse. Best results if you get all 3, but the rinse out mousse is mandatory. use it twice a week or after every shampoo to maintain that bright red tone. its a conditioning foam that has a red stain in it that replaces the red pigments lost after shampooing and UV exposure. that being said, you have to work FAST or wear gloves, or youll have pink hands after using it. shampoo with color safe shampoo *shade memory or color.smart are fantasic for this purpose* then use the foam, you only need to apply to the red bits if your going black, leave in for a few minutes while you wash yourself, then rise, add conditioner for a bit, rinse, then your done. beware, bright colors can stain towels even after many washings, especially if you use this product to restore its brightness.

The only way to stop fade in any hair color is to deposit on virgin hair. If you don't have virgin hair it is going to fade.

You could try a color shampoo, like the ones from John Freida that have the color in them to refresh evey time you wash.
