Highlighting Hair @ Home ?

Whats the best home highlighting kit use, im in the UK by the way. Im just wondering what you've used, whats good and whats bad? I can get hold of some proper salon colours but would like to know if you have used any over-the-counter stuff and how it was. I've only ever been to a salon before but would like to give it a go at home?

Thanks for your help x

if this is your first time i would suggest you go to a salon, but if you want to do it @ home try herbal essences highlighting kit by clairol. just be sure to get someone to help with the back of your head and be sure to use very little when depositing on the roots.

if you feel confident in yourself do it at home. but in my past experiences doing highlighting at home has turned out bad. and then you are stuck. if you dont mind spending the extra money, go to the salon. better safe than sorry

How come you didn't post this under Answers UK?

Go to a hairdresser to get it done. Watch what they use and how they do it. The next time around, you may be able to do it yourself, though that is never a good idea where any kind of color is concerned.

i always get a mate to help me, as it can be tricky...........

i used a shwartzkoft (or something like that) one and it was ace!...it was a special highliting kit and came with a cap to pull the hair threrw and a brush to put it in your hair, and the colour was fantastic.................

and my hair was left really soft.

the only tip i have is if you use the cap, make sure you pull the hair threw really tightly so it gets to the root, if not ur left with a line

I used the l'oreal colour expert highlighting kit for a while and trust me dont go there!! Not necessarily this kit just home highlighting in general.

It is fine until your roots come through and reapplying the highlights in the same places on you head is a nightmare! Using the base colour first also doesnt help with this problem as you still get light/dark patches as the hair is absorbing the amount of colour at a different rate.

After using it 4 times, I went to the salon for them to fix it, my hair was dry, brittle (despite my looking after my hair like my life depended on it!) and the colour was patchy %26amp; brassy.

I would say stick to the salon, they can choose the colours to suit your skin tone, and they are the professionals. They train for years!

Please just dont go there with home highlighting, words from my bitter experience.

Whatever you decide - good luck! x

The common mistake with people is colouring their hair at home. full stop.

Unless you are only adding tones such as red to your hair its pretty unlikely you will be successful.

This is for a few reasons:-

Colour - when purchasing colour you don't know how it will react with your hair. Many products are with low peroxide - giving you a darker colour or even orange colour to what you expected or even a high peroxide - making you too light.

Your hair history - When buying colour from a shop that product is aimed at virgin hair, normally light. If you've coloured, relaxed or permed your hair previously then it is likely to react differently and the effects can be devestating.

Your hair condition - speaking from personal experience on this one. Porous hair will soak up even temporary colours. Bleached hair with temporary red dye results in a lovely pink shade for many weeks.

Application - Applying highlights yourself can leave patches, roots and look really shocking.

Highlighting Kits - Remember if you are darkening your hair with this kit first, you've then got to lift the hair back to get a highlighted effect.

I'd really recommend going to salon as they can look at your hair, access the history and use an appropriate peroxide without damaging your hair.

Hope this helps x

I used this multilightening kit by garnier and my hair turned out a right mess. To be honest, dont try highlighting your hair at home coz it just doesnt work. The kit i brought containing a tiny little wand and its very difficult to get it even and do the back of your head. I ended up looking like a zebra.
