I want to dye a purple streak in my blonde hair, do I need to bleach it?

I have long dirty blonde hair with highlights. I have never dyed my hair or done anything chemical before and I just wanted one violet (ManicPanic's Ultra Violet) strand. Will i need to bleach my hair first? I really really don't want to, but i want the purple to be noticeable and vibrant. What I'm trying to say is- If I dye my hair purple without bleaching it first, will it still be pretty vibrant and obvious? Or is it ABSOLUTELY necessary to bleach it first?

yes, it will be vibrant. it would be MOST vibrant if you lighten your hair first, but since your hair is already light, it will look cool!

I was gonna get hot pink streaks from manicpanic but I decided to dye my hair brown (Im natural blonde). Anywho, I recommand you do. If you don't, really good chances it will go red. I never had experience with manicpanic but you don't HAVE to. They just recommand it. good luck with it! by the way; purple is an awesome colour. :]

when you are dyeing your hair a darker level then what your natural level is, never put bleach on your hair, bleach is for going lighter not darker, go for a demi permanent color, that way if you like it you can go permanent, keep in mind you may decide on a diferant color by the time the demi shampoos out. no damage and you still have choices.

already having dirty blonde hair is a bonus for what you want to acheive. To get a vibrant effect, yes bleach is necessary, however, since you're in the blonde stage, the bleach would not have to stay on too long. It only needs to lighten up a couple levels lighter than your natural hair. and if you only want to do peices of purple, using foils is the easiest. Honestly, going to a salon to have it done professional is my suggestion. One strand of purple is simple and would not cost you much to have done professionally. So..if you apply it over top of your current color, it may show up, but no where near as vibrant as if that strand was bleached first. It would accept the purple better if bleached and last longer. good luck.
