I highlight my hair and usually just fix my roots. I want to grow out my hair and do as little to it as possible. Can I keep brown roots as long as it looks ok? Is that fasionable or just cheap?

The answer to your first question is that it is ok to have roots, but they are out of style. Since what is "in" is in relation to what Hollywood is doing most of the celebs are sticking to one color at this time. Their stylist are encourging them to go for a more natural color of hair.

it's kind of tacky, no offense. unless the highlights are a similar shade, and not far from your original hair colour

I don't think dark roots look all that great. Maybe you can make your hair all one color with a demy permanent dye.
